"Acres of Diamonds" was told over 6,000 times at seminars by Russell Conwell to raise funds for the foundation of Temple University. Its lesson is as powerful today as it's ever been.
A wealthy Persian farmer, Ali Hafed, heard tales of other farmers who'd earned millions discovering diamond mines.
He sold his farm and began searching for his own diamonds at the Mountains of the Moon. Ali Hafed spent the rest of his life wandering the African continent then Europe in search of these gleaming jewels.
Finally worn out, in poverty and in a fit of despondency, he threw himself into the Bay of Barcelona in Spain and drowned.
Meanwhile the man who had bought Ali Hafed's farm happened to be passing a small stream on the property when suddenly there was a bright flash of blue and red light from the stream bottom. He bent down and picked up a good-sized stone. He took it home and put it on his mantle as an interesting curiosity.
Several weeks later a visitor picked up the stone, looked closely at it, weighed it in his hand and nearly fainted. He asked the farmer if he knew what he'd found. When the farmer said he thought it was a piece of crystal, the visitor told him that he'd found one of the largest diamonds ever discovered.
The farmer had trouble believing that. He said that his stream was full of such stones. Not as large as the one on the mantle, but they were sprinkled generously along the stream bottom.
The farm Ali Hafed had sold to go in search of diamonds turned out to be the Golconda mine, the most productive diamond mine in the world. It produced some of the largest diamonds in the English and Russian crown jewels.
Ali Hafed had owned, free and clear, acres of diamonds but had sold his prosperous farm for practically nothing in order to look for diamonds elsewhere.
If the Ali Hafed had only taken the time to study and prepare himself, to learn what diamonds look like in their rough state and, as he owned part of the African continent, to thoroughly explore the property he had before looking elsewhere, his wildest dreams would have come true.
