"Starting Your Own Email Newsletter" Many of our readers have recently inquired about starting their own email newsletter. Questions have ranged from the "Why", to the "How". Today's tip will answer both of these questions and give you a few resources to make it happen. If you are not already publishing your own e-newsletter, I highly recommend you do so. Publishing an ezine is not difficult and it's great for your business! Here are the "why" and the "how". First the "WHY"...
And Now The "HOW"... Should you decide you want to give it a shot, here's how to get started... Select a good email program. I prefer Eudora Pro by Qualcomm. Qualcomm is a steady company currently trading on NASDAQ. (You may have seen it's stock price surge nearly 20% earlier this week - guess I should have gotten a few shares after all, but that's a story for another time!). Although there are close to a hundred different choices in email programs, (I've tried a handful), Eudora is a popular choice because it is very easy to configure and use. It also has a built-in feature that lets you mail to a large number of email addresses at once. If you don't want to buy the Pro version which is available in software stores, you can download a free version called Eudora Light at their web site:
Once you have your email program set up and configured, practice mailing to a few people at once by pasting a few addresses into the "nickname" field. (Eudora calls it this, other programs like Pegasus call it a "distribution list".) Next, send a message to yourself and paste your subscriber list in the BCC (blind carbon copy) field. It's important to use the BCC field when mailing to a list. This insures that everyone on the list does not see all the other email addresses on the list. No one wants their email address publicized all over the net. After you've perfected your skills, all you need is some email addresses to send your newsletter to. That's easy, simply post a message telling people about your newsletter to the "NewList Announcement List". NEW-LIST@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDUBefore you post, get your hands on a copy of my new book, "Insider Internet Marketing". On pages 86 and 87 you'll find the exact message I sent to announce my newsletter last year. It resulted in over 500 new subscribers, a great way to kick off any newsletter! Now that you know the "Why" and the "How", what are you waiting for? Start your email newsletter before the end of the year and 1998 will be a banner year for your company!
