Reciprocal Linking is a fundamental ingredient of any website promotion plan. You've got a great product or idea to market and designed a fantastic site - the last thing you want is to see it lost in cyberspace! To give your website a fighting chance and the visibility it deserves, you need other sites to point to yours with links.
With a few links under your belt, it's crucial that they are well maintained. Tedious though it may be, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Think of your website as a garden. You've planted the seeds, watched them grow, and now you must cultivate them so they stand out among the others - to weed out the competition, if you will. If you want to grow a successful reciprocal links campaign, all you've got to do is check your D.R.A.W.E.R.S.:
D) DEAD LINKS
- You know how fast things can change on the Internet; Web sites move and pages are taken down, leaving you with dead links that take your visitors nowhere. Make it a point to periodically click through all your links to be certain they're working properly, and that they link to active websites.
R) ROTATION
- Don't make it appear as though you're favoring one site over another by always listing the same link at the top of your links pages. Rotate your links weekly - even DAILY if you can. One way is to list them alphabetically, then move the top link to the bottom and move the other links up one level.
A) ADDING & EDITING LINKS
- When a Webmaster asks for his site to be included on your links page, you should visit their site first to examine the quality of the site. If it looks good, send an email to let them know you'll oblige their request. They may also ask for changes to how the link appears on your site, or to the actual URL itself. Promptly make the requested changes, test to be sure that it is working properly, and send the Webmaster an email indicating the job is complete.
W) WEBMASTER RELATIONS
- Surely you've experienced the frustration of waiting for a response to an email you've sent. Don't discourage potential or current links partners by making them wait. When a Webmaster contacts you to add a link or request changes, be sure to comply in a timely manner. Then, follow up with an email to signal that the change has been made. This is key in maintaining a great relationship with your fellow Webmasters.
E) EASY TO READ
- As you add, edit and remove links, it's important that your pages remain easy for your visitors to read and navigate through. Break your links into categories or subcategories, and divide them into columns. It's also helpful to include the total number of links that each category has. Keeping this number updated will allow visitors to see when new links have been added.
R) RECIPROCATION
- Take time to visit your swap link partners' sites to verify reciprocation. A few things to make note of:
- 1) how "deep" into the site visitors must go to find your link,
- 2) whether it is listed under the proper category/heading,
- 3) whether your link description is correct, and
- 4) that the link is to the correct page. If anything is not to your satisfaction, or you are unable to find your link, simply contact the Webmaster
S) SEARCH FOR NEW SITES
- "Mary, Mary quite contrary, how does your garden grow?" By planting more seeds, of course! There are new websites popping up every day; ones that your visitors will find interesting and relevant. Schedule some time each week to search the Net to give your customers new sites to check out. They'll appreciate it - They'll remember you for it - And they'll be back!
Okay, all this may sound overwhelming (especially if you're managing several links pages), but it doesn't have to be. An exciting new tool called LinksManager.com has changed the way reciprocal links pages are maintained.
