Absolutely everyone that intends to sell anything on the Internet must develop a strategy to generate affordable traffic. The best products will not sell if no one knows they exist.

The Internet is a marketing tool that works by attraction. Your site doesn't appear in your prospect's browser. When someone visits your site, something or someone attracted him or her. In other words your visitor must DO something to visit your website.

Marketing by attraction is difficult because we must do something to attract visitors through the search engines. To find our websites someone usually types a word or phrase in a search engine and choose from pages presented with content matching their request.

This word or phrase is a "keyword". So the key to attracting targeted traffic is knowing what exact keywords or phrases will do the best job of attracting your ideal prospects to your website. The trick is to get your web pages to rank in the highest position possible in the search engine's indexes.

If your keywords are too general, there are thousands of matches and you are not likely to land on top of the listings. On the other hand, if your keywords are too specific too few people will actually type them in a search engine.

Therefore, the trick is to discover the keywords that are just right, not to general and not too specific. This is both an art and a science. Since one top-ranking page can bring you thousands of free visitors for an extended time, it's worth the effort if you can invest the time.

Today I would like to share some of the tools I use everyday to attract free traffic. These tools to require some time to learn but if you are like me and have more time than money they can help attract a lot of free traffic, and since I don't buy traffic I expect to invest some time.

7 Search.Com's Keyword Research Tool

This tool will research any word or combination of words. It will tell you the current cost for any word or phrase to buy a number one ranking. It will report the expected number of times your keywords will be used, the current bid cost, and the projected monthly cost.

I am not interested in the costs because I don't buy placement but I am interested in what others are willing to pay. I can optimize my word combinations for the free search engines, but an even better strategy is to optimize phrases that yield less traffic but are more specific to the contents of my pages.

This tool also estimates the percentage of visitors you might get is based on your placement in the listings. This is important because it's often a whole lot cheaper to buy 2nd, third or even a tenth place listing.

The real power of this tool is to look for new combinations of keywords. Often you will find a popular phrase that will generate enough traffic that a 10th place ranking would generate quite a lot of free traffic.

Often I will create a specific page around a specific keyword phrase knowing that it will only generate 100 visitors a month. If it attracts the right kind of traffic and it's free, it's well worth the effort.

Jim's Tools

This site contains many useful webmaster's tools including a keyword suggestion tool, a Link Popularity Analyzer, a Search Engine Submitter and a Directory Submitter. I have used them all. To use the keyword suggestion tool you enter a phrase and the tool will generate a list of related keywords actually used in searches. I find this utility valuable to discover new combinations of keywords to optimize on my pages. You will also find an excellent Search Engine Forum.

Keyword Density.Com

Keyword density is a critical aspect of search engine optimization. Keyword density is the ratio of a keyword or key phrase to the total words on a page. To rank highly, your keyword density must not be too high or too low. A density of 1% to 7% is usually considered good.

To use the keyword density tool you enter your URL and the tool does the rest. It will tell you the density percentage in each part of your page. It will also report the density of your phrase to the whole page in a percentage of the total words.

In general, the more common the phrase you are testing is, the higher keyword density you want.

GoTo.com's Search Suggestion Tool

Goto has what they call a Search Suggestion Tool. Type in a keyword phrase and see how many times it's been used in actual searches. In addition, it will display a whole list of similar combinations of keywords and the number of times they have been used in searches. They also provide a utility that will tell you the going cost to purchase placement in the GoTo search engine results. If you are buying keyword placement you want to purchase the lowest cost keywords that will deliver the traffic you want.

To use paid placement you need to know how much you can afford to pay for traffic and still earn a decent profit. In theory, you can find many excellent keyword combinations to use when optimizing for the free search engines.

Marketleap Link Popularity Analysis Tool

Link Popularity is simply a way to measure the total number of links that a search engine has found for your website. Link Popularity is getting more important all the time. With so many websites optimized to any keyword or phrase the number of websites containing links to your website is another factor search engines use in determining your ranking. I understand how much work this can be because I have been at it for 5 years. If you have more money than you have time, you might contact one of the following ranking services. The costs may run from about $49/month to as high as several thousand dollars per month. If your site generates revenue, then the monthly service fee can seem like a drop in the bucket compared to the revenue, which can result from the mass traffic to your site.
