Confessions From A Reformed E-Zine Publisher

When I first started publishing NetNews, a little over a year ago, I did it because that's what everyone else was doing. It was working for them so I figured I would throw something together, get a ton of subscribers and make a mint off of it with little or no work. What did I need to do but send it out every week? I could get article submissions from other writers, throw in some classified ads and I got myself an e-zine.

Well, as you can see I was still learning about this beast we call Internet Marketing and I did not have a clue as to how to publish a successful e-zine. I was able to get a couple hundred subscribers in the first week or so but keeping them was a different matter all together. It seemed as if I would get 25 new subscribers and lose 26 after I sent out my weekly edition.

It was not a particularly proud moment in my marketing career but it did reinforce a very important lesson that I had learned early on. Content is King! Regurgitating someone else's material and expecting to make good money in an already saturated and competitive market does not take you down the road of success.

I decided to concentrate on content and publish a quality e-zine every week with my own thoughts, ideas and reviews. I put a lot of time and research into the articles that I write every week but it pays off. Subscribers are rolling in, and the amount of unsubscribers is almost non existent. If you want to be successful, you need to make your publication stand out from the rest. Give your subscribers a reason to look forward to your e-zine.

That is not to say that everything you publish in your e-zine has to be your own. Some of my favorite e-zines have a feature article from the publisher and a guest article from someone else. What I am saying is that you have to have some major part of your e-zine as your own.

Another thing that I hear a lot from people who are just starting out is that they do not have the time or they are too new at this and don't have the knowledge. You don't have to be an expert to publish a good e-zine. If you are just starting out and you can't come up with your own article every week, write a tip of the week column that tells your readers what you learned about marketing this past week. Write a review every of a site you went to or a book you read. Whatever you decide to do, make it your own and do it right or don't do it at all.
