Spam is Fool's Gold

If you were told that you could make a lot of money on-line with little or no effort, wouldn't you consider it? Just about everyone who markets anything on-line has tried UCS or bulk mail (spam), and the vast majority never try it twice.

Everyone seems to have a different definition of what spam is. I consider spam as any unwanted, un-requested or un-targeted email. It's spam if you didn't specifically request the information. I NEVER buy anything I learned about from UCE (spam).

I don't talk much about spam but I sure get a lot of it. I get well over 1,000 spam emails a day. I filter out over 90% but I still spend about 1-2 hours a day just sorting through the spam to get to the real messages. I realize I sometimes don't get important email that gets filtered out, but that's all I would ever do if I read each spam. People who email me often use my name in the subject to help make sure I get it.

When gold was discovered in California in the late 1800s, many people dropped whatever they were doing and rushed to California to try to get a share. The majority of prospectors never found gold. Most of the people who made money made it by selling services to the few who did find gold. Most spent it almost as fast as they found it.

The people who found gold, for the most part, didn't have the skills to make it grow; instead most spent it almost as fast as they found it. The saloons, hotels, and brothels generally did really well charging 6 times the normal prices.

The Internet is the gold rush of the 21st century. Everyone agrees there is big money to be made, yet only a few are making it. I know people earning thousands a day. If fact I know one person selling a service for $20 a month to over 8,000 customers, (it's not a porn site either). What would you do with 160,000 a month?

In almost 4 years I still don't know anyone who actually makes money from SPAM. A few insist they do, but they can't prove it to my satisfaction. Some people do make money from spam, but indirectly - by selling lists and bulk email services. In almost all cases the client doesn't make enough to cover the costs.

I challenge anyone to PROVE that they regularly earn ANY profit directly as a result of spam mailings. I'm not talking about selling spam services. If anyone can prove it, I'll run a article telling everyone how they did it.

The people who really do make money from spam are the ones selling lists and the services. The loosers are usually their customers, who not only waste their money, but get sued by ISPs and others who suffer real losses due to spam.

The following report tells the story. A study released by the Spam Recycling Center reported in a recent issue of NUA Surveys filed the following report.



One Third of All Spam is Pornographic

"Nearly one third, 30 percent, of all unsolicited email is pornographic in nature and 29.6 percent consists of "get rich" offers. Of the latter, 12.5 percent were selling spamming techniques from bulk email lists to software which allows you to spam from home.

Of the total amount of spam sent, 23.5 percent was in the "Direct Product/Service Solicitation" group. This group contained spam on health products, cures, charities, legislation and gambling and sweepstakes.

Spam selling health products was one of the largest categories in the "Direct Product/Service Solicitation" group, accounting for 9.9 percent of email. Of that, 21.4 percent was for Viagra or Viagra substitutes. Sweepstakes and gambling spams accounted for 3.3 percent of the above group.

The figures are based on a database sample of 98,948 messages collected between May 11 and July 1 of this year. Interestingly, of those messages collected, nearly 2,500 were computer viruses. 17,004 contained AOL return addresses, 5708 contained UKONLINE return addresses and 4946 contained Hotmail return addresses."

What the report doesn't say is how much people paid to send the spam. It also doesn't report the consequences as a direct result or any sales resulting from the mailings.

Yet with all we know about spam email not working, email marketing was, and is, the most cost effective way to market anything on the Internet. What I am referring to here is highly targeted opt-in email.


OPT-IN EMAIL IS REAL GOLD?

Opt-in email is email that you asked to receive. If it's really opt-in email, you will be able to prove it later on. For example you can put a form on your web site where people can request information from you. The email that they receive is automatically generated by their request for information. All Opt-in email should offer a simple method to be removed from all future mailings.


OPT-IN EMAIL IS NOT

  • Sending unlimited emails
  • Sending email unrelated to the original request
  • Using auto responders as return addresses
  • Sending unrelated email
  • Collecting email addresses on your web site without permission

Auto responders are getting a lot of unfair attention lately. Most of this attention is due to the fact that many people use them improperly. If you think one un-targeted email gets someone angry, try sending a series of unwanted emails via auto-responder.

Yet programable Autoresponders are, in my opinion, the "Best use of email in Opt-in Internet marketing.". Sending a few short follow-up messages compounds your chances of making the sale by planting little seeds to simulate and re-activate their interest.


I use the two step marketing approach
  • 1) Generate a lead.
  • 2) Follow-up to generate a sale

In the gold rush of the 1800s only a few found gold, mostly because they knew the right places to look. Everyone else was a bird in paradise flapping it's wings, but getting nowhere.

Likewise, the average prospect to customer conversion rate is usually only around 1% to 2%, in most cases. Using a series of short informative email follow up messages that explain to your prospect each sales point completely, generates more sales. It can push your sales to 5% or more. That is enough to make the difference between profit and loss for most prospectors.

Don't settle for "fools gold". Go for the real thing. Use opt-in email marketing in combination with powerful informative sales letters for all your products and services.
