Over 59 million information products sold online in 2006 alone.
Last year selling information in an ebook format accounted for over 20% of all Internet sales, and the percentage is growing. Information products are almost 100% profit. The key is to offer detailed, valuable, hard-to-find information in your special area of expertise at a reasonable price.
Authors are now offering every type of subject matter online in the form of ebooks. Almost anyone can create, publish, and sell information products. You can deliver information in ebooks at almost zero cost as a downloadable ebook from your website.
You can also use free information products to promote your business, drawing thousands of visitors to your web website at little or no cost.

During the last year, I tested several ebook compilers on the market. There are two common formats in use to produce ebooks. Both offer a secure way to sell and distribute your ebook.
You only need two tools to publish a ebook. You can use free software or buy software that is more professional. You need a HTML editor to produce the pages as you would any webpages. You also need a HTML compiler or Adobie Acrobat to compress the HTML code so it is a portable document.
Adobe Acrobat
Acrobat is a popular software program by Adobe for creating ebooks. The Acrobat format is not my first choice for three reasons:
In order to view ebooks produced in Acrobat format your customer must download and install the reader software - while free, it takes time. The Acrobat software required to produce ebooks is expensive and the learning curve required to master Acrobat is steep the graphically challenged.

HTML Compilers
Ebook compiler programs use standard HTML files to produce executable files (.EXE). These files display your ebook in your web Browser. You already have your browser installed.
Windows comes with Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Anyone can download and view ebooks produced with any compiler software using any Netscape, Internet Explorer or other Internet browser.

Security Issues
If you are selling information products, you don't want to make it too easy for people to copy your original source files. Good HTML compilers make it difficult if not impossible to copy and resell your information without your permission. The author can make it impossible to copy and/or print the information. In addition, most compiler software programs provide an option to use multiple passwords keyed to your computer or to your hard drive to protect your ebooks from theft.
Selling Ebooks Online
Credit cards are the currency of the Internet. The cheapest way to accept credit cards online and create your own affiliate program at the same time is to use a service like Clickbank or PayPal.
PayPal.com is free and charges a small percentage of your sales.
ClickBank.Com has a one-time $49.95 activation fee, and a $1 and 7.5% fee per sale. There are no monthly fees. While this approach is not free, it's cheap and is less expensive than acquiring your own merchant account and affiliate program management software.
In addition, you can earn up to 50% commissions reselling hundreds of other people's products online through Click Bank's Affiliate Programs. And it doesn't cost anything to signup. If you are not ready for a full blown merchant account, try ClickBank.Com.

I have tested several compilers. The two programs that I liked most are listed below with my favorite on top. I considered ease of use, product cost, security, and functionality. I found that the price had very little to do with the quality of the software.
