Search Engine Relevance, or How to get a top position on the Search Engines If your like me you've probably read the last few hundred OR SO articles on the "Search Engines". The do's,the don'ts and everything in between. I think that most of what I've read lately is missing the most important fact about Search Engines. And that is, that the Search Engines are locating web pages that are relevant to the keyword/s that a searcher has typed into the search box. That is the idea behind all the search engines! With that in mind you need to know how to write a web site/page that the search engines will rate as highly relevant with regards to what was typed into the search box. A little knowledge and some common sense and you can obtain a top position on the Search Engines. After all it's not rocket science-------REALLY!!!! How do the Search Engines rate a web page for relevance? 1. The title tag is the #1 factor : the search engines give special emphasis to the words when ranking for relevance. So put your keyword in your title tag, always put it as the FIRST word in the title. 2. The #2 factor is your headline tag or anything between and Use your keyword as you did in the title tag but don't repeat the title tag. Come up with something that is close to the title tag. 3. The description tag is the#3 relevancy factor. Use your specific keyword in the description tag as the first word and use it at least 2 or 3 more times. Just don't over do it! 4. The number of keywords you use in your keywords meta tag: it may seem funny but as of this writing the ideal number of keywords is just THREE. not two,not four or more but just 3. The last factor for determining relevance is keyword density or the number of times your keyword is used in the body text of the page. To rate at the top, your keyword should be used frequently but not too frequently. It should be used as near the top of the page as possible. A good rule of thumb is to use the keyword just as if your talking to someone you know about the topic. Be sure to focus your efforts on developing a page centered on just one keyword. That way you only have to write on just that one particular subject area and not have to worry about how relevant it will be ranked. If you follow the above guidelines there is no reason that your web site/page shouldn't get into the top 20 or even the top 10 at most of the Search Engines.
